Sound healing has been practiced for centuries as a powerful tool for relaxation, emotional balance, and overall well-being. If you’ve never heard of it before, you may be a little hesitant before giving it a go so I decided to write this blog to share with you how it works and what are the benefits of incorporating sound healing into your routine?
As a practitioner, I use a range of beautiful instruments in my sessions, including the monolina, gong, crystal singing bowls, bar chimes, buffalo drum, and koshi chimes, to guide clients into deep states of relaxation and healing. So, let me share with you how these sounds can influence the body, mind, and energy systems.
What Is Sound Healing?
Sound healing is a therapeutic practice that uses vibrations from various instruments to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The principle behind it is that everything in the universe, including our bodies, is in a constant state of vibration. When stress, illness, or emotional trauma disrupts these vibrations, sound healing can help restore this balance.
How Does Sound Healing Work?
Our bodies are highly receptive to sound. Did you know that different frequencies and tones influence our brainwaves, nervous system, and even the energy flow in our bodies? Studies suggest that sound-based treatments can help improve mobility, reduce pain, and lower blood pressure. According to Psychology Today, sound healing practices can shift the mind into a meditative state, promoting relaxation and overall well-being. Sound healing also helps in the following ways:
1. Brainwave Entrainment for Deep Relaxation
When exposed to the soothing sounds of singing bowls, gongs, or chimes, the brain naturally shifts into slower, more meditative brainwave states—alpha and theta waves—which are associated with deep relaxation and heightened intuition.
2. Resonance and Cellular Healing
Did you know that our bodies are made up of approximately 70% water? Due to this it makes us excellent conductors of sound. Vibrations from sound healing instruments penetrate deep into the body, promoting cellular rejuvenation and energy flow.
3. Chakra and Energy Balancing
In many traditions, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, sound healing is believed to cleanse and realign the body’s energy centres also known as chakras. Instruments like the monolina and crystal singing bowls are often tuned to specific frequencies associated with different chakras.
4. Stress & Emotional Release
Stress, anxiety, and emotional trauma can get “trapped” in the body. The deep, resonant sounds of instruments like the buffalo drum and gong help shift these stagnant energies, allowing for emotional release and healing.
What Are the Benefits of Sound Healing?
Incorporating sound sessions into your routine is a great way to be consistent. Regular sound healing sessions can have profound effects on both physical and mental well-being. Research has shown that sound therapy can help improve mood, reduce tension, and enhance overall well-being. A study published by NCBI found that participants who engaged in singing bowl meditation experienced a significant reduction in stress and anxiety. Other key benefits include:
1. Reduces Stress & Anxiety
The calming frequencies of sound healing slow down the nervous system, reducing cortisol levels and promoting relaxation.
2. Improves Sleep Quality
Listening to singing bowls, chimes, or monolina vibrations before bed can help improve sleep by encouraging deeper, more restful states.
3. Boosts Mood & Emotional Clarity
Sound therapy can help release blocked emotions and bring clarity to unresolved feelings, supporting mental well-being.
4. Enhances Meditation & Mindfulness
For those struggling with meditation, sound healing provides an effortless gateway into mindfulness by helping the mind settle naturally. Due to this, I use my instruments to assist clients with these troubles when I host guided meditations and some hypnotherapy sessions.
5. Supports Pain Relief & Physical Healing
Studies have suggested that low-frequency sound waves may help reduce chronic pain and inflammation by promoting blood flow and relaxation. This YouTube video show the change in blood after a 20 minute gong session.
6. Balances Energy & Chakra Alignment
Many report feeling lighter and more balanced after a session, as sound healing helps clear blockages in the chakras and meridian system.
What Instruments Are Used in Sound Healing?
There are many amazing sound instruments available to use. As a practitioner, I incorporate the following instruments into my sessions and I’m adding to my collection all the time:
- Monolina – A deeply resonant instrument that produces harmonious overtones for relaxation and energy alignment.
- Gong – Powerful vibrations that penetrate deeply, helping to release stress and stagnation.
- Crystal Singing Bowls – Producing pure, high-frequency tones that promote clarity, healing, and chakra balancing.
- Bar Chimes & Koshi Chimes – Light, ethereal sounds that soothe the nervous system and elevate the spirit.
- Buffalo Drum – A grounding, rhythmic tool that connects with the heartbeat and promotes emotional release.
Each instrument has its own unique qualities, but together, they create an immersive experience that fosters deep healing.
